Low Voltage Lighting
February 23, 2008
Low voltage lighting usually refers to lighting applications that use 12 volt lighting fixtures instead of the typical 120 volt fixtures. Low voltage lighting is a popular choice for landscape lighting projects.
Low voltage lighting isn’t as bright as line-voltage fixtures (which operate on 120 volts). For this reason, its uses are slightly more limited. For example, low voltage lighting is best for lighting paths and illuminating small gardens or flowerbeds. Spot lighting can be done but is not as effective as line-voltage lighting. However, in spite of its limitation, low voltage lighting is a great way to add beauty to your home in the evening hours.
There are several advantages associated with using low voltage lighting. The first advantage is usually what most people find attractive; low voltage lighting kits are relatively inexpensive. Most kits can be purchased between $80 - $200, which is a bargain compared to hiring a licensed contractor.
The second benefit of low voltage lighting is the ease of installation. Even a complete novice can successfully install a low voltage kit. If you’re the type of person who is used to doing handy-man jobs around the house, you can expect to complete the installation in an afternoon. The typical low voltage kit involves pluggin in a transformer, connecting the wire and running it into your garden, and then attaching the lights to the wire. It is quite easy and again, much less expensive than hiring someone to do it for you.
The third advantage is realized through the very nature of low voltage lighting; it does not consume much power. Adding a low voltage lighting kit to your home should not increase your monthly electrical bill by much. This is especially true it you include a timer that limits the amount of time your lighting is used each day.
Lastly, low voltage lighting is neighbor-friendly. The light produced from a low voltage kit is not bright enough to contribute to light pollution (the glowing effect that removes the night sky… or that keeps your neighbors awake).
As you can see, the many benefits of low voltage lighting makes it a great choice for your landscapes and gardens. With a small investment and a little help from a buddy, you can enjoy landscape lighting in no time!
